Part two of the Fave GOT7 Songs. I knew I’d have a lot to talk about in part one, but I had to end it at some point. So in this follow up, we’re talking about my favorite subunit songs and solo songs I think are slept on. So let’s get into it!
Jus2
FOCUS ON ME
One of my favorite subunits of all time. I hate we only got the one album from them because it’s God tier. One of my favorite albums. I love “Focus” as the title track. The styling in the music video is wonderful. I’m a Gucci girl and I love the GG logo and print. I remember being obsessed with Yugyeom’s orange sweater.
I also remember being in love with Yugyeom’s all Gucci print suit. His styling in the video was a bit more fashionable out of the two. But Jay B’s styling really suits him, and the GG printed blazer he has in the thumbnail is something I want in my closet.
I love the R&B house sound “Focus On Me” has. I love that the album name and title track are just different enough. The choreography with the two of them is great. I loved Yugyeom’s solo dance scenes. This was just a great time. I went back to see what my thoughts were from 2019, and they’re mostly the same, lol.
DRUNK ON YOU
When it was announced this subunit was going to be another Jay B centric one, I rolled my eyes so hard, lol. I thought JYPE would give us the 97′ liners, Yugyeom and BamBam as a subunit one day. It just made sense to me since they, well, mostly Yugyeom was underutilized vocally for a long time. BamBam has always had a pretty decent presence on GOT7’s songs. Yugyeom and Mark were supposed to be more or the choreo and flip focused members of the group. Especially when it came to choreo, that was Yugyeom’s thing.
But to my surprise, having leader, maknae pairing was much better than my idea because I think what I was thinking was basically JJ Project, but with 97′ line. This is way better. I adore the R&B, Deep House, and Downtempo vibes going on here.
“Drunk On You” is slower paced than “Focus On Me”, but only slightly. The strings are perfect, Jay B’s voice is a little softer on this track and I think it’s a perfect pairing to Yugyeom’s voice. I just love that they’re both singing throughout this album.
TOUCH
Both Yugyeom and Jay B participated during the writing and music process. But I can just TELL when Defsoul (Jay B) has taken over. I believe I will revisit some of Jay B’s solo music post-GOT7 because ideally, theoretically, I should love this mans music just as much as Yugyeom, Kai, and Baekhyun. But from what I last heard, I wasn’t that impressed. So maybe I just need some fresh ears on it.
“Touch” screams Jay B and it’s phenomenal. I love a downtempo ballad like this. The instrumentals are dramatic but not over powering, and the vocals are great.
SENSES
My FAVORITE song off Focus, surprise to no one I’m sure, lol. I love love love Deep House. I have this on my Deep House & Electric playlist on Spotify. It’s also been a staple on my Fave Songs ATM playlist as well.
LOVE TALK
This album’s pacing is great. We start off dance-y, then we slow things down a bit, then with “Senses” and “Love Talk” pick the pace back up. Another great Deep House track, this time with Yugyeom being the only one of (lol) the duo participating in the writing and music parts.
LONG BLACK
Now, when this album first dropped, I didn’t realize (because I didn’t check) that Yugyeom had written this one. But now that I hear it with that knowledge, it still doesn’t feel like a Yugyeom track to me, lol. I like it, but I guess it’s the chorus, how that’s sung. That feels like Jay B.
This is my least favorite song off the album, but at a 7.7 out of 10. Not quite an 8, but not something, after revisiting this album as a whole, something I missed and want back in my life. I need to see if I can still get a physical copy of this. I meant to years ago and never did 😅.
Jay B/ Def.
HOLIC – Jay B
Jay B’s SoundCloud when it dropped back in the day, was a massive deal for the fandom at the time. He essentially released an EP on there of five songs. There used to be a version of this song where you could hear the door opening in “HOLIC”.
This YouTube video still has it in. Then at the end of the series, in “Bad Habit“, you hear the door closing. WHHHHYYYYY why did you remove that in the new versions of these songs Jay B??? That was so cool and creative. You can listen to that EP entirely here. But I loved that little treat in the old versions. Anyway, out of these songs, “HOLIC” is my favorite. I used to listen to it a lot on SoundCloud. I wish it was on Spotify.
Youngjae/Ars
Victim of Love – Sanjoy, Youngjae (Ars), & Elliott Yamin
Oh, what a fantastic song! I still have so much love for this song. Another one I wish was on Spotify as well. The name ‘Ars‘ comes from the latin phase “Ars longa, vita brevis” which means “Art is long, life is short”. So that’s why you see that used by Youngjae. It’s his favorite quote.
Elliott Yamin is one of his favorite artists, so I was so happy and proud that he got to work with him for this song. And the song slaps. Sanjoy is great on it as well. I think because this is exclusively on SoundCloud and YouTube, that’s prevented me from listening to it more now that time has passed since the initial release.
Vibin – Youngjae
Since we’re on a Youngjae wave now, I figured we could also talk about “Vibin”. I like this one because it reminds me a bit of Jeong Sewoon. I checked out a few of Youngjae’s solo music, but I haven’t kept up with it much. I’m definitely feeling an urge to dive deeper into his solo catalog as well.
Jinyoung
DIVE – Jinyoung
I still love “Dive” so much. I’ve talked about this song so much. He’s my favorite GOT7 member, so I had to squeeze a segment in to showcase his solo music as well. I’m hoping that in between his dramas, like with Seo In Guk, he’ll keep releasing solo music. I love his voice so much (this applies to both Mr. Seo In Guk and Jinyoung, lol)
Cotton Candy – Jinyoung
My other fave solo song of Jinyoung’s. I’ve talked about this one before too. I called “Dive” “a sweet, refreshing tune” in my July 2021 article. And I feel the same about “Cotton Candy” that seems to be Jinyoung’s vibe. Sweet, cozy, refreshing vibes.
Yugyeom
LOLO – Yugyeom
It feels a bit unfair to even have Yugyeom included in this article because he’s literally one of my favorite male soloist right now. Pretty much everything he’s released since his solo has gone triple diamond in my household. So I’ll include my top 3 favorite songs of his. I’m keeping this section short because I have talked so much about Yugeyom already, lol.
“LOLO” is great. Super catchy, a bit of a sexier side of Yugyeom. I forgot (because it’s been awhile since I last saw this video) how entertaining the music videos are under AOMG. I love their art direction and productive.
Take You Down (Feat. Coogie)
Yugyeom has a way of making a song, well multiple, that I just get tunnel vision for, and I can’t stop listening to them. “Take You Down” is still one of those songs for me. A comfort song. I love Coogie’s part. Yugyeom’s repeating “don’t leave me alone” throughout the song.
So what does Coogie do because he’s had it? “Please leave me alone” directly after Yugyeom sings “don’t leave me alone”. It flows so smoothly. I love the bitterness this man going through, lol. And I love a feature that makes you want more but doesn’t overstay its welcome. 20/10 song.
Running Through The Rain – Yugyeom
“You already took my heart 피하고 싶지 않아 (Pihago sipji ana)” this line delivery in the pre-chours gets me EVERY TIME. Like all three songs previously mentioned, I’m obsessed with them, they’re such earworms.
But there’s just something so special and my favorite Yugyeom song. Maybe because I love a good Gray production, but I can still go back to this song years later, and it still feels like home. One of my emotional support (K)R&B songs. I think the order goes this one, “LOLO”, then “Take You Down”.
And that’s it for this round. I haven’t kept up with Jackson’s solo music at all, Mark’s wasn’t my style, and the same with BamBam. So that’s why they’re not on here. I wasn’t purposely excluding rapline, but … it is missing, lmao.
I guess that just gives me a reason to come back to this series in a few months or years and add more songs to the list. But I’m curious about what some of y’alls fave GOT7 solo member songs or subunit tracks are. Let me know in the comments. Don’t forget to follow me on Twitter, Instagram, Threads, & BlueSky. And I’ll see y’all next time with the QT on GFRIEND’s Season of Memories.
Take care!
