Intro

I know I said the next article was going to be on Kep1er, but I completely forgot I had this set up in my calendar to go live a week before GOT7’s comeback… The entire reason why I decided that waiting to release this article in January made sense 😅. So today we’re talking about one of my favorite Kpop groups, GOT7.

GOT7 for those who aren’t familiar are a seven member boy group formed by JYP Entertainment. They debuted January 16th, 2014, with “Girls Girls Girls”, which we will talk about shortly. The group consists of Jay B (leader, main vocalist, lead dancer and center), Mark Tuan (lead rapper and visual), Jackson (main rapper, lead dancer, and face of the group), Jinyoung (sub-vocalist, visual, center, and face of the group)…

Wait, you can have more than one member who’s the face of the group? I always thought this was exclusively Jackson’s role because of his popularity (back in like 2014-2017) on variety shows. Mans was everywhere. Hmm. Oh well, love that for him. Anyway, then we have Youngjae (main vocalist), BamBam (sub-rapper, but I always had him as lead rapper as well in my mind), and last but not least, our maknae Yugyeom (main dancer, sub-vocalist).

The fandom name is IGOT7, but as Ahgase (아이갓세븐, meaning baby bird) is predominately used by ifans. It was Mark’s idea to call the fans baby birds. They have one of my favorite group intros, “Come and get it, GOT7. Hello, we are GOT7”. And in 2021, their contracted ended on January 19th, and they left JYPE. They are currently signed to Warner Music Korea.

There’s so much I want to cover in this article, so buckle up. I’ll have everything listed in the header so you can scroll around a bit. But the general layout is intro, my background, group albums, and solo/subunit tracks I don’t think get a lot of love. I’m gonna have to make this a separate article, this one is too long already, 😅. So let’s get into it!

How I Became an Ahgase

Accidentally, if memory serves. I’ve talked a lot recently about how October 2014 was when I fully became a Kpoppie. I remember becoming more of a Jackson stan first, then slowly getting into GOT7 for their songs and shenanigans. The first GOT7 related thing I could find on my Tumblr blog was this one with N and Hyuk from VIXX and Sungjae from BTOB from December 2014:

https://brownsugarrilakkuma.tumblr.com/post/106723412615/taekwoonies-their-definition-of-not-being

I didn’t really know the members’ names for a while outside I think Jay B and Mark Tuan (I will be using his first name and his full name interchangeably throughout this article). And I wasn’t super consistent with tagging back then with Tumblr, so it was difficult finding specific eras when I was super into GOT7 on there. But it was sprinkled in. I think my peak was 2016-2018.

There were so many groups I was following closely during this time, and many of those groups were friends:

But I wasn’t purposely seeking GOT7 until I started seeing more of my mutuals on Tumblr talking about them. And by the time “Just Right” released, we had both Mark Tuan and Vernon from SEVENTEEN wearing that donut hoodie by Odd Future. Sooo many idols wore that damn hoodie, lol.

I remember watching Real GOT7, GOT7ING, and other shows of theirs on YouTube. This episode was one of my favorites at the time:

I’m kinda surprised JYPE still has all this up on YouTube, thankfully. Oh! I cannot forget After School Club with them going on there stressing Jamie at work, lmao. Those were some of the funniest episodes. This one is a classic. And that was one of the main reasons why it was so easy for me to become an Ahgase. They’re so funny and charming. I will die on the hill that GOT7 is one of the most naturally comedic and entertaining groups in Kpop. Idk how JYPE got that dynamic worked out so well.

Musically, as GOT7 got older and more say in the production process, they really got to showcase more of their talents and show off their years of experience. But I still listen to Identify, their first full-length album, regularly. “Girls Girls Girls” and “Just Right” are Kpop required listening in my opinion. “If You Do” went triple diamond in my house and car. Okay, okay, I think it’s time to get into the music.

Got It?

Girls Girls Girls

Straight fire 🔥🔥🔥. The confidence and audacity is what gets me. I’ll talk in detail about my GOT7 concert during FLIGHT LOG: DEPARTURE segment, but the loudest part of that entire concert was everyone screaming Mark’s line of “Every lady wants a piece of me”. The loudest concert I’ve ever been to, still. It was such a blast. Iconic line for one, and two, we love a confidently, slightly cocky man. To quote the great Britney Spears in her song “Radar”, “Confidence is a must, cockiness is a plus” Mark embodies this in one line.

The song itself as a debut song is perfect. GFRIEND really has me thinking about this more lately, since writing that fave songs article. Being able to showcase the groups’ identity and sound in such a short period of time, three to four minutes with great execution, is hard. But GOT7 knocked it out of the park. I didn’t listen to “Girls Girls Girls” until after “A” or maybe “Just Right”. I remember it was months after debut. I feel like it was probably 2015. Perhaps late 2014.

GOT7’s charm, well, one of them, is their odd instrumentals. They are a founding fathers when it comes to noise music. “Hard Carry” isn’t on this list, but they were 8 months pregnant with Stray Kids there. Anyway, “Girls Girls Girls” is noise music lite. It’s very Hip Hop, Justin Bieber ‘swaggy‘ in “Boyfriend”, early to mid-2010s cringe in the best way. I’ve always been here for it. It’s slightly camp.

MONSTA X also leaned into the ‘noise music’ aesthetic, which I’ve talked about in their respective articles, but GOT7 also had their interpretation of it too. Where MONSTA X had more of a reputation for having horns and a lot of bass in their music and gave them more of a cold, cool guy vibe, GOT7’s sound was more playful, flirty and smooth cool guy vibe. Now that I think about it, too, it’s interesting the different paths they took with their sound as they evolved.

MONSTA X had more of a Hip Hop and R&B with a little EDM mixed in at the beginning, then evolved into more EDM dance, and less Hip Hop heavy. Occasionally, they like to remind us of their roots, lol.

Meanwhile, GOT7 started out as more dance focused tracks with Hip Hop and Pop in the forefront and got more R&B and EDM as they got older. You’ll see as we go through GOT7’s catalog.

Also, had to throw in J.Y. Park wrote this song. Do what you want with that information. I think it’s hilarious but totally tracks.

Like Oh

My favorite song off this album. I love the chorus and what vocaline is doing here. Jay B and Youngjae slayed on this one.

Identify

Stop Stop It (하지하지마)

“It’s Jay B’s song” – girl a couple of seats away from me at my concert back in 2016. That’s always stuck with me with this song after that show, lol. She wasn’t wrong. At the beginning of the music video, he’s trying to impress Dahyun from TWICE. And she’s just like, “Whatever, man.” lmaooo. We see other future TWICE members in the video too, like Chaeyoung. I think Somi is here too. He’s the main character in the video, and I forgot how entertaining their videos are.

I also forgot how tragic the styling is here, lmao. But the song slaps. There’s a loooong time when we had this awful styling. Hair and clothes, you just had to push through it.

I really like this song too because it’s lazy Korean learning. I love a direct translated title track that’s repeated multiple times throughout the song. If you didn’t know 하지마 meant stop (it) before, you do four minutes later.

Magnetic(너란 Girl)

This is a better example of them looking much better outside some of their early looks. Although, BamBam’s hair … Girl … Anyway, my favorite song off Identify. It’s another one of those where you have a Korean phrase repeated throughout the song. Though this time the English translation is it’s you girl.

This is such a cute song. I love when GOT7 is in their cute concept/softie guy bag.

Stay(그대로 있어도 돼)

Identify is my second favorite album (studio, full length) of GOT7’s. I remember when I first sat down to listen to it, I was in shock. I wasn’t aware of the variety and versatility they have. “Stay” is such a good song. I love Jinyoung’s voice on here so much. And you know, the “그대로 있어도 돼” is featured all throughout the song.

I love when GOT7 has a member start the song, and they end it like Mark’s parts in “Stay”. The oohs and do-do-dos are such earworms.

Just Right

When I say “Just Right” is required listening, I mean you also have to watch the video. This is such a creative music video. They don’t make stuff like this anymore. I think this was GOT7’s first major domestic hit. It really connected with Korean audiences more than anything else previously released by the group.

This song was everywhere within the Kpop space at the time. You couldn’t see a random dance play without this song popping up. Literally, the one and only time they gave us a cute concept title track. And it’s funny that it’s their most recognized song by non-fans. But GOT7 themselves don’t really acknowledge it much. I think it’s because it’s so out of place for them, image wise. One of these things is not like the other.

The choreography is some of their best. The message is a little cheesy but uplifting. Only GOT7 could make something like this that’s goofy but well-meaning like this while being 100% serious about it.

MAD

If You Do(니가 하면)

The girl. The title track of all GOT7 title tracks. The one that got them their first music show win. A fan favorite. Beloved song even among non-fans. There’s so much to talk about with “If You Do”. I’ll try to keep it short. But it ultimately boils down to a perfect storm for GOT7. The momentum they built from “Just Right” really paid off. Even though it’s entirely different in tone and genre. I mean, it’s still R&B/Pop but not as Pop-y as “Just Right”.

This was GOT7’s first dive (Jinyoung pun intended, I love that fooking song) into a maturer sound and image. And styling wise, things are looking up. I think from this point on we stopped getting the Mohawk, faux-hawk looks. This is the first signs of the GOT7 we have currently. *Jackson voice* “This is ..GOT.. 7.”

Like with “Just Right” the chameleons that are GOT7 showed us all another side of them, and we ate that shit right up. Our favorite yet. Sad boy hour on main going on with “If You Do”.

“If You Do” is another song if someone is new to Kpop that I’d recommend. It’s so good, the emotions, the drama. BamBam’s iconic “Every day, every night. Feel like a fool, you gotta know” line. I can’t find the Arthur meme right now, and it’s killing me because I was positive I had it saved, but it looks like this:

And you’ve might have seen it in passing and not even realized it was referencing this song. When I find the original, I’ll include it. But anyway, hearing BamBam sing that part is sooo healing and soothing. I look forward to it every time, like Mark’s line in “Girls Girls Girls”. The best part of the song 🏆. Another big takeaway from the song is the girl speaking English with an Australian accent. Once you know the lyrics, you can help but to say it along with her.

Sam Lewis and Rado of Black Eye Pilseung killed it, God tier track. We have another title track with the direct translation in the title. And I think this is one of the best examples of rapline’s best performance in GOT7. Each member’s part is memorable and flows so smooth with the rest of the song.

The line distribution isn’t too bad either. The choreo is great. This, like with “Just Right”, is something you have to experience for yourself to truly understand it. It’s like trying to describe chocolate. It’s difficult, and it’s slightly different for everyone, but generally, people like it.

If you’ve never heard a GOT7 song before, start with this one. Highly recommend, and I’m jealous it’s your first time hearing it.

And shout out to “Good”, my favorite b-side on MAD. I always thought it was funny the album is called MAD, but about halfway into it, they’re “Good”. I love Jackson on that track.

FLIGHT LOG: DEPARTURE

Fly

Aw yeah, my favorite GOT7 series. When I tell you I was obsessed with Flight Log series, I really was all in on it. I love the plane concept.

Now why was Mark out here looking so fine all the time. During this era, I was a huge Jackson girl (I was for most of my time as an Ahgase) so Jackson’s … what do you call that? Hip thrust? That move at the beginning had me (and other Jackson girls) shook. He did not perform it like that live in Atlanta, though (rip).

Anyway, his introduction and the way they set up the choreography throughout the video is perfect. I love BamBam’s verse. I feel like BamBam doesn’t get his flowers for his work in GOT7 because he has some iconic ass moments. I’ve always preferred his rap style/delivery to Mark’s because of how smooth it is. His ability to both sing and rap well reminds me so much of Han from Stray Kids. I feel like Mark’s lines are a bit hit or miss, like Sehun from EXO. They have similar rap deliveries to me.

Vocaline continues to slay. I forgot they used to have like ‘stars’ in their videos and this time it was Jinyoung. His haircut isn’t my favorite, lol, but again the styling is much better than where we started.

Can’t (못하겠어)

So the best part of Departure era is this is the first time we really see all the members (except for Jackson? I don’t remember what that was about. He had credits on MAD) with song credits. Jay B with Defsoul and Youngjae with Ars. Remember these names because I’m going to talk about them again later in this article. But yeah, the members had much more control creatively, and I think the music greatly benefited from it.

“Can’t” is one of my favorite b-sides GOT7 has released. The instrumental at the beginning is referenced Jay B’s “Holic” and I love a good call back.

FLY 2016 1st World Tour (Skip If You’d Like)

So my second Kpop concert ever was GOT7 and this show. My first show was B.A.P on their Young, Wild, and Free (I think that’s what I was called, lol) tour. Same venue. I’ll talk about B.A.P one day on here. I think they’re supposed to have a full group comeback sometime this year.

Anyway, I was super excited to see GOT7, annoyed that we wouldn’t have the official lightsticks for our show. But by the time they got to LA, those Ahgase (our newly named fandom) would have them. So that was sweet for Mark to see (I’d hope) for his hometown return.

I took numerous pictures and video, but most of it now is unwatchable, lmao, but I’ll include what I have here. I was a huge Jackson girl when I entered the venue and left a Jinyoung girl, Jackson, I’m sorry. I thought what we had couldn’t be broken, but alas, I am weak. And now in 2025, I’d say you’re probably like third place. Yugyeom really stole my heart with his music 🙈. I really love Jinyoung’s music too, but homeboy spends more time acting, so we don’t get music as frequently. But now that he’s done with his enlistment, maybe we’ll get more.

Here’s a clip of “If You Do” live. I had a balcony view. You can’t tell in my video, but I actually had a pretty good view of them.
And here is part of “Magnetic”.
And this is them near the end of the show. I think I don’t remember why I didn’t get a tour shirt.

I was alone at this show, I am usually at concerts. I don’t mind. But I met some nice girls at the show, and I talked to them off and on during the show. This is still one of my favorite concert experiences ever. Easily top 3 favorite Kpop concerts I’ve ever attended. The set list was fire, the boys were hilarious, just like they were online/in their variety shows. Super handsome and talented in person. I missed them 😭.

I would love GOT7 to do like a belated anniversary tour or something. Maybe I’ll add that to my 2026 Kpop wishlist if I remember it, lmao.

FLIGHT LOG: TURBULENCE

Prove It

My favorite GOT7 b-side. When I learned Jay B wrote this and worked on the music for it, I knew I wanted a solo from him. And I wanted more music like this for GOT7.

I’ll never forgive JYPE for not giving us the full performance of this song. Because why didn’t they just start the song with Jackson’s rap?? I get they were trying to do it based on subunits, but I hate they did it that way, lol. Mark was right there, and they cut to his part in this live performance, lmaooo that takes me out.

Who’s That

BamBam’s intro still cracks me up. I love it. “Who’s That” feels like GOT7 letting their hair down and being a little silly again. And it’s a Jam Factory track, so of course I’d love it.

I thought I was crazy about Departure, but once Turbulence dropped, I was down bad. I was even more invested in this era. I bought the album from KTOWN4U or someone, and I ended up getting BamBam’s version. I loooooved this album so much. I used to listen to it all the time. Now I mostly come back for these two songs. They still bring me so much joy and good feelings. Both songs still hit the same for me.

FLIGHT LOG: ARRIVAL

Sign

I’m torn because while my most listened to GOT7 songs are from this album, this was my least favorite of the series. I hated “Never Ever“. At release. It felt so choppy and jarring vocally.

When I listened to it again for this article, it’s actually not that bad. But definitely not a title track I’ll come back to on purpose. Why would J.Y. Park do this to me? Give me one of the best GOT7 looks, and a title track I don’t like. I do like Jinyoung’s “you belong to me” part. Idk I think this is around the time they decided not to renew, lmao.

Okay, this live performance pisses me off because despite them looking amazing. The white hair on BamBam is a look™️, they cut out Mark’s best rap. Or at least my favorite GOT7 rap. His flow and delivery is flawless. But still worth the watch. This is the song Youngjae wrote and did the music for. It’s crazy how well the members can give each other parts to enhance and display their strengths vs JYPE.

“Sign” is criminally slept on. It ties with the next song as my second favorite GOT7 b-side.

Don’t Care (양심없이)

Now I bet you were wondering when we were going to talk about the bae, Yugyeom. Right now!!! I love “Don’t Care” so so soooo much. You can see so much of Yugyeom’s style and solo sound here. He, like Jay B and Youngjae knew exactly what they wanted their solo music to sound like. I listen to this and “Sign” regularly. They’re both permanent songs on my Fave Songs ATM playlist on Spotify.

Present: You

Lullaby

Now idk wtf GOT7/JYPE was on (I put 90% of the blame on JYPE) in the later half of 2017, but that 7 or 7, (cute album name) was NOT it. I fell off GOT7 and MONSTA X hard during this time. MX was on their “DRAMARAMA” bs (although they had more songs I liked off that album) and then GOT7 was letting me down. But like MX, GOT7 bounce back briefly for me.

“Lullaby” isn’t a song I think about much, but I never skip it when it comes on. And I love that they released a good version in English. I mean, by this point the entire group was fluent in English whether they wanted to or not, lol.

But I wasn’t crazy about the rest of the album, and revisiting it for this article didn’t change my mind either.

Spinning Top

ECLIPSE

OOh yeah, we’re back, baby!!!! Thanks to Jay B also having lyric credits. This feels like the GOT7 that made “If You Do”. There’s such a refreshing, re-energized energy here despite the descriptions of anxiety and lack of stability they talk about in this song and the recurring theme throughout the album I didn’t like.

Yeah … even though I loved “ECLIPSE” and the choreography for it, this album wasn’t enough to bring me back into the fandom. I started listening to more NCT, TXT, back to SEVENTEEN (I’ve mentioned my ups and downs with them, but I’ll talk more era specific in their articles) but “ECLIPSE” dropped a few months before my girl “Fear” and An Ode, a top 3 SVT album for me.

So… yeah, the tides were turning. Crazy thing too is before either of these songs, MONSTA X made a bit of a comeback for me with “Alligator and “Play It Cool”. 2019 was a weird year in Kpop.

It’s a shame Spinning Top didn’t connect with me more musically.

Dye

NOT BY THE MOON

If it’s a space song, I’m prolly gon’ like it 💁🏾‍♀️. This music video is so gorgeous. I love when groups are on their high class, bs. The styling and choreography again are 10/10s. The passion and high energy is back. I guess J.Y. Park saw our complaints, lol.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t crazy about this album either. Even though Yugyeom got the biggest parts in a GOT7 title track, ever, at this point in their career. Both “ECLIPSE” and “NOT BY THE MOON” are in my top 5 fave GOT7 title tracks, easily. But these albums aren’t doin’ it for me. And this was the last GOT7 song under JYPE I liked, loved, really. I stopped checking for them as closely after, this. I had long dropped them out of my ‘stan’ list of fave boy groups. So that leads us to our last two songs of the group songs.

Got7

Don’t Care About Me

In 2022, GOT7 made their first comeback since leaving JYPE and Breath of Love: Last Piece. A much-needed break. GOT7 feels like they’re back to their roots and I think Ahgase appreciate the care and hard work they put into this album (all their albums) because they really could have just continued with their solo endeavors. And despite the overlapping schedules, they released a solid album.

I had to discuss “Don’t Care About Me” first. It’s my second favorite song off this album. Yugyeom (you gon’ jump if Yugyeom made it) and Jinyoung (*Gigi Hadid voice* big slay) composed and wrote this song with Ludwig Lindell. Feels like a GOT7 song in it’s most pure form.

Two

GIRRRRRRRRRL when I heard this song I knew our beloved Yugyeom wrote this shit. I can hear his pen from 12,000 feet underwater. I need more people talking about this song. I mean, it’s pretty well received. It has over 6 million listens on Spotify, but I wanna see that 35 mil on here like “NANANA” has.

I’ve talked about this song before on ATK, and it just continues to have a ton of love from me. Another top fave b-side for me. It’s after “Sign” and “Don’t Care”. So, fourth fave song, I guess. Highly recommend this one if you haven’t heard of it.

OKAY, I think that’s enough yapping about GOT7 for the day. I was not expecting to do a part two to this, but that’s how the cookie crumbles. I guess that’ll be the Wednesday post. My schedule is messed up again 😅.

Anyway, I hope y’all enjoyed this dive into GOT7. I hope it encouraged some of y’all who weren’t familiar with them to check them out. Let me know what your favorite songs are in the comments. And tell me who your bias is. I’m nosy, lol. Don’t forget to follow me on Twitter, Instagram, Threads, & BlueSky. I’ll see ya next time with another GOT7 article, apparently.

Take care!

Ash💫

Almost forgot this gem.
