I didn’t like it. I stopped listening to it about halfway through the album on my first listen. And I almost did again, working on this article 😅.
I am very confused to what happened here. So I guess let’s start with the title track, “Run Away”.
I’m not sure if it’s Tzuyu’s delivery of the chorus that feels bland. But something’s off. This shouldn’t have been the final result. I like the rest of the song okay. I like that it’s an upbeat dance song. But it kind of reminds me of Taeyeon’s “I” in how jarring that intro is. Which happy nine-year anniversary to Miss Taeyeon’s solo debut. Neat timing on that.
I feel like maybe it’s the melody. Maybe if someone does a cover of it, I’ll have something to compare it to. But I do not like this song for her. The music video is fine. She looks stunning. I love her styling in it. But this ain’t it. I won’t listen to this song again unless I have to.
“Heartbreak In Heaven (Feat. Peniel of BTOB)” has the same issues. I don’t like how Tzuyu is just singing the title without any umph to it. It just feels like she’s reading it off the paper without putting any spin on it. Peniel’s addition is the best part of the song.
“Lazy Baby (Feat, pH-1)” starts off so much better. It feels like Tzuyu has gotten more of her footing, and she’s loosened up in the studio. Then we get to about the 25th second and everything goes down hill. What the hell? Why did they do that?
Why did they pretend to give us a mature R&B track just to push us into some Disney Channel pop song on us? I think on my first listen, this is where I turned it off and listened to something else. Again, the rap feature is the best part of the song. Our girl is 0-2.
“Losing Sleep” feels like we’re finally being thrown a lifesaver. Best song on abouTZU. Third times the charm, I suppose. I do like this one a lot. It’s a Jam Factory (Moon Yeorum specifically) track, so that explains a lot. But I wasn’t expecting to see Tre Jean-Marie, who worked on “Got It Good” by Craig David and KAYTRANADA, (one of my favorite songs in general) also worked on “Losing Sleep”. OMG??!!
“One Love” is okay. Nothing noteworthy, good or bad. It’s just fine. “Fly” is a ballad and is the second-best song on the album. They should have focused more on songs like this for Tzuyu’s solo, instead of trying to appeal to more people with a pop sound. It feels like they didn’t trust she could sell a solo album more unique to her, so let’s water down songs that could be on a TWICE album, and give her those songs.
Times like this remind me of why it’s okay, not everyone in a group “get” a solo. Or needs one. Especially if it isn’t going to showcase that artist’s talent that may be overshadowed in their group efforts. This feels like a wasted opportunity.
I’m sad I didn’t enjoy this album or era more because the visuals for abouTZU are gorgeous!! You can see a bunch of photos here. And the album title is so cute and clever. I just… Idk man, we lost so hard.
So, uh, what are your thoughts on Tzuyu’s solo debut? Do you have a favorite song on it? Tell me your thoughts below. Next up is Yeonjun and “GGUM”. Remember to follow me on Twitter and Instagram.
Take care!
