SPILL THE FEELS is giving me ;[Semicolon] flashbacks. Heng:garae a bit too. Idk what was going on with SEVENTEEN in 2020, but I wasn’t feeling it, lol. Which also came out in October (October 14th 2020). I haven’t gotten around to my SEVENTEEN deep dive series yet, but I guess this is a slight fire under me to get me started on that. But I didn’t like ;[Semicolon]. I never go back to listen to it, and the one song I did like, “Light a Flame”, I don’t go back to it much.
I respect the experimentation going on genre wise with ;[Semicolon], but it wasn’t for me. And that’s exactly how I feel about SPILL THE FEELS. I should have loved SPILL THE FEELS with its heavy House sound. The album opener “Eyes on you” is good. It feels like it could probably be like 30 seconds shorter. It drags on a bit.
“LOVE, MONEY, FAME (feat. DJ Khaled)” is fine. I do like it more every time I hear it. I knew having DJ Khaled on the song was literally just going to be what he always does on every song. He does his “DJ Khaled, we the best” and then he peaces out until the last like 15 seconds of the song to say his name, the artist or group’s name and “another one”.
I have no idea what else anyone expected from that man, lmao. I mean, he is a producer and stuff, but nothing new was done here. Actually, Western collab wise, this is pretty good. Doesn’t feel forced. The lack of DJ Khaled also works well.
This music video is so wild. It was hilarious watching each member have a side plot with their bouquets. I kept wondering what they were going to get into next. I like the chicken dance move in the choreography. That’s my favorite part.
“1 TO 13” is also fine. I don’t have much to say on it. I like it, but it doesn’t have that hook on me either. “Candy” sounds good. Perfect rainy day, coffee shop music. Vocal team slays again.
“Rain” is my favorite song off this album. It feels more SEVENTEEN. “1 TO 13”, “Eyes on you”, and “LOVE, MONEY, FAME” just feel too safe. Like they’re designed to be more general public friendly.
I was expecting more songs like “Rain” and one of my all-time favorite SEVENTEEN b-sides, “Wave”. Both Performance team songs, no wonder I love them so much. There’s something about a Performance team track that always hits. Maybe we should have just let them cook on this album.
Hip Hop team, I expect there to be songs that are hit or miss for me. I’m either praising them, and I don’t know them. “Water” is a miss, but I see the potential. I feel like I’d enjoy it more live.
SEVENTEEN does this thing where it’s like every other year or two they make nothing but back to back music I love. Then it’s a drought of music that is missing something. I don’t want to call it mid, but there’s less bite to it or something. There are parts of SPILL THE FEELS I like. But as a whole, I don’t think I’m going to have much to say on it in the future. Filler, this feels like an anime filler episode or arc. That’s the vibe on SPILL THE FEELS.
Nothing that’s gonna make me feel like dropping SEVENTEEN, I’ve said this before, and I’ll continue to say it, but one, it’s okay not to be in love with every album your fave drops. I’ve been a Carat for almost ten years, so it comes and goes. No biggie. Still love my team, love my crew.
